VESTPURSEMENTS - THE ART OF SHANNON BROWN
2007, JULY and AUGUST Artist of the Month
Shannon Lynn Backhaus Brown, an artist and inventor, (and a good cook,) is from Augusta Missouri, a rural community on the Missouri River near St Louis. Her grandfather was deputy sherriff of St Charles County. Mom was fortunate to meet Shannon at Stephens College, where the two earned their Bachelor degrees. Mrs. Brown's degree is Bachelor of Arts in History. Never mind that--Shannon is and has always been an artist, expressing herself in paint and pastel, and with her needle and thread. The months of July and August, 2007 featured her artwork, beginning with her own invention, VESTPURSEMENTS (tm).
Shannon's mother, Joyce Backhaus, has always been a power shopper, Queen of the resale and garage sale, and Shannon enjoys the same love of shopping The Great Bargain, collecting wonderful vests from all over St Louis and St Charles. The only problem she encountered was that many of the great vests collected did not fit Shannon or any of her friends, so never one to be wasteful, Shannon has turned them into imaginative, beautiful and useful handbags which have been christened 'VESTPURSEMENTS (tm).' She liked the design so much that also included are Vestpursements (tm) made from scratch, using wonderful fabric remnants and fanciful freehand embroidery. All her purse designs and embroidery designs are original, flowing from Shannon's imagination and into being. (Our friend Aliene Leigh, of Ali's Crafts, has also designed a Vestpursement (tm) for men, an half-vest to be worn under your coat or jacket to carry larger objects, like a map or a letter-sized document.)
Shannon Brown has many more sides to her artistic expression, and as the images are supplied, her exhibit here at The M.A.D. House Artists will be expanded. Her home is full of kitties and fresh growing herbs to complement the fabulous cuisine she and her husband Robert create daily. They have two brilliant and handsome sons. Active in their church, Shannon does the closed captioning for 'Principles for Life', from the Church On The Rock in St. Peters, Missouri (near St Louis.)
